Estonian Air threatening to close down flight route Kuressaare-Tallinn

Estonian Air sent a letter to the Saare County Government that unless they would reach an agreement by early August, they would terminate the route contract before its expiry, writes LETA/Delfi.ee, citing the regional newspaper Saarte Hääl.

“In such an eventuality, we will end operating flights on the route Tallinn-Kuressaare-Tallinn from September 1, 2011,” stated the airline’s Vice President in charge of Commerce Rauno Parras.

In the light of the financial results on the route and the operating costs, the aviation enterprise has two proposals to amend the route contract that was concluded in autumn of 2008.

According to one proposed option, the subsidies ought to be increased by 4,048 euros per return flight as the costs incurred through aircrafts and the crew have increased. An alternative presented by the airline would be to change the flight schedule since September, leaving the subsidy rate per flight unchanged, but increasing the number of subsidised flights from seven to eight per week.
