Kubilius: Rail Baltica will bypass Marijampole, when loads will increase

Prime Minister of Lithuania Andrius Kubilius is supporting the idea that the European railway gauge Rail Baltica would be built to pass through the town of Marijampole there were the old gauge is built, while in the future, if the volumes of loads increase to a certain extent, a possibility of bypassing the town would be considered.

On his Monday visit to Marijampole, the prime minister said this would be a faster and more effective way of building the gauge, reports LETA/ELTA.

"Rail Baltica is not only a modern railway gauge, but it also means a significant European investment, creating new jobs for the residents of the town and developing the existing railway gauge. We will do everything to ensure that the interests of the local community would not be breached," Kubilius said during his meeting with the local authorities. "We have been to Klaipeda and discussed the liquefied natural gas terminal. We also visited Visaginas as to the construction of the new nuclear power plant. Here, in Marijampole town, we are talking about the building of Rail Baltica gauge. These European projects are very important to the Lithuanian economy, yet none of them should impede the day-to-day life of locals. It is important that the arguments would not delay the construction of Rail Baltica," the PM noted.

As reported, some residents of the town and local politicians have been protesting against the building of the gauge through the town of Marijampole, as the levels of noise pollution may increase together with growing volumes of transported loads.
