The Riigikogu constitutional committee submitted an amendment to the law of amendments to the Aliens Act, according to which the Security Police (KaPo) in Estonia will carry out security checks on airport workers, Riigikogu press service said.

The new law is based on the new EU requirements on aviation safety and the need to implement the regulation fast, informs LETA.

“I admit that this amendment does not have much to do with the initial text of the law and it is like sewing another coat’s button on a jacket. But the safety of the Tallinn Airport cannot suffer because the Riigikogu, that will end its work next week, would not have been able to approve of a corresponding separator bill,” said constitutional committee chairman Väino Linde.

According to the bill, the security background checks on airport staff will be carried out by KaPo but the final decision on whether a person passes the check will be made by the Aviation Board or the concerned airport operator or aviation company.

The primary aim of the law of amendments to the Aliens Act was to implement common proceedings for disputing visa proceedings. The other aim of the bill was to bring domestic legislation in line with long-term visa decrees.
