However, Licis indicated that the plan for Saulkrasti differs from the situation in Jurmala, and that rather than buying permits from special machines, in Saulkrasti drivers would acquire permits from kiosks and shops giving them the right to use parking spaces in the city, informs LETA.
The Saulkrasti local government recognizes that visitors to the local beach have difficulty in finding parking spaces, similar to the situation in other seaside towns, for example Vecaki or Vakarbulli, where Riga City Council has introduced parking meters.
One of the newspapers readers remarked that since the bypass on the "Via Baltica" was opened, meaning that Saulkrasti is no longer on the main transport route to Estonia, the "no parking" signs along the main road should be removed. To this, Licis pointed out that the local council was not the owner of the roads, and that while the process of handing roads over to local councils was ongoing, it was still the responsibility of the Latvijas valsts celi road maintenance company to regulate the usage of road signs in many places, including Saulkrasti.
