Estonian Economy and Communications Minister Juhan Parts had a meeting on Tuesday with Rail Baltica European Union coordinator Pavel Telicka and they stated that it is possible to launch the Tallinn-Warsaw passenger train connection in the coming years, the ministry said.

Parts said that this requires cooperation and will between the three Baltic States and the European Commission.

Parts introduced to Telicka a proposal to focus on the railway connection implementation project so that passenger train transport could be launched on the existing infrastructure in the coming years.

Parts stressed that it must be possible to travel by train from Tallinn to Warsaw in a reasonable time and that the Estonian state has invested in it already and will invest in the future.

Parts said that a common initiative is needed so that passenger transport wouldn’t get stuck in the web of bureaucratic and technical obstacles.

Telicka said that the topic will be raised at the next pan-European transport networks conference in June.

The Estonian state invests in 2008-2011 together with EU support nearly 1.3 bln kroons in Rail Baltica.
