According to Janis Vilnis, board chairman of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone, the terminal will be built by the firm Baxet Coal Terminal, which is connected to companies working in the Russian coal extraction industry, writes LETA.
At present it is difficult to assess the value of the project, as the location named by the investors is lacking port infrastructure – it will be necessary to build a landing area, carry out dredging work, and construct a railway line. Part of this work will be carried out by the City of Liepaja, with the involvement of European Union money.
Baxet Coal Terminal intends to transport coal from Russia and convey it onward to Western Europe and the U.S.
The company's application will be examined by Liepaja City Council on Tuesday, March 9. It will also be necessary to evaluate the project's environmental impact.
