The rescue operation of the stranded cruise ship Mona Lisa, which ran aground on a sandbank on Latvian shores this past Sunday, has cost LVL 135,000, according to calculations made by the Interior Ministry.

As reported, the Bahamas-flagged passenger ship Mona Lisa with 984 people on board, including the ship's crew of 327, ran aground on Irbe Strait on May 4, at 7:25 a.m.

Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis (Latvia's First Party/ Latvia's Way) said in an interview on the Latvijas Neatkariga televizija television's program "900 sekundes" earlier in the week that the Mona Lisa will not be permitted to leave before it compensates Latvia for the ship's rescue operations in Irbe Strait.

As reported, the Mona Lisa, traveling from Riga to Tallinn, ran aground due to errors by the crew, as a representative from the charter company Lord Nelson Seereisen told LETA.

According to the information that Lord Nelson Seereisen has obtained, the ship has not suffered any serious damage and on Saturday, May 10 is expected to return to Germany.
