Riga International Bus Terminal serves 5.8% fewer passengers in 10 months

BC, Riga, 25.11.2016.Print version
Riga International Bus Terminal in the Latvian capital served 1,471,671 passengers in the first ten months of this year, down 5.8 percent from the same period last year, the bus terminal reported LETA/BNS.

The number of inbound buses at the terminal grew 3.4% y-o-y to 130,535 in January-October 2016.

Elita Lukjanovica, Logistics Manager of Riga International Bus Terminal, said earlier that the number of inbound buses has been growing primarily on account of increasing international bus traffic. However, operators of such international bus trips, like Ecolines and LuxExpress, often sell bus tickets themselves, which means that their passengers are not included in the bus terminal's passenger statistics.

Explaining the reason for the drop in passenger turnover, Lukjanovica said that this is mostly due to Latvian residents leaving the country to live and work abroad, as well as rural residents moving to the capital city, thus lessening the number of passengers traveling on domestic routes outside Riga.

Last year Riga International Bus Terminal served 1,857,699 passengers, but the number of inbound buses at the terminal reached 151,803.

Riga International Bus Terminal is indirectly controlled by the Riga city municipality.
