Saaremaa Baltic Workboats to build patrol boat for Estonian police, border guard

BC, Tallinn, 07.05.2016.Print version
The Saaremaa-based boatmaker Baltic Workboats is set to build a new patrol boat with pollution combating capability for the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board for 13.4 million euros, informs LETA/BNS.

The boat replacing the PVL-202 Kati, a vessel almost 50 years old, will significantly increase the response capability of the Police and Border Guard Board, Postimees said.

Edgar Peganov, head of the fleet of the Police and Border Guard Board, said the new boat's maximum speed is double the maximum speed of the Kati, enabling faster response to emergencies.

"The modern and well-equipped boat will be used first and foremost for monitoring and combating pollution," Peganov said, adding besides being faster the new vessel outfitted with state-of-the art technology will outperform its predecessor for functionality and seaworthiness.

The new vessel will be 41 meters long and have a draught of 2.6 meters. Its maximum speed will be 25 knots. The boat will be operated with a crew of ten and it will have eight additional beds for extra personnel. The boat must be able to operate in ice up to 10 centimeters thick.

The boat will be equipped with a personal water craft (PWC) at least 3.6 meters long capable of developing a speed of at least 40 knots for use in rescue, patrol and pollution combating operations.

The boat is due to be completed by the beginning of 2018. According to the terms of the public procurement tender, the boat must have a useful life of at least 30 years and it is estimated to be mobile for 2,000-2,500 hours per year.
