Tallinn becomes culture capital of Europe for 2011

Today, on January 1, Tallinn has gained the title of European Culture Capital 2011. A string of undertakings, including art projects, musical concerts, literature readings, sport and folk events, performances, and exhibitions, will take place in Tallinn through the year 2011.

European Culture Capital Tallinn 2011 is deemed to be the most significant cultural event in the history of the country.

 

European Capital of Culture will arrive with a night concert and fireworks. The opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture will present music by a folk band Kukerpillid, rock favorite Tanel Padar & The Sun and Estonian breakthrough pop group IIRIS the Theatre Square.

 

The organization titled Tallinn 2011 is responsible for the choice, organization and carrying out of all the events in the framework of Tallinn as the European Culture Capital for 2011, as well as popularization and promoting planned events.

 

"The year of the Capital of Culture is a great occasion for all Estonia. Our aim is to encourage people to participate in the creation of the Capital of Culture and to help convert ideas into events. We unite the will with the power," as Foundation Tallinn 2011 writes on its website.

 

Tallinn 2011 was established in April 2007.

 

This year will be shared by Tallinn with a Finnish city Turku, a city so close to Estonian capital. The European Capitals of Culture 2011 – Turku and Tallinn – will showcase themselves in Helsinki from June 11th to June 13th, 2010. In the course of Helsinki week the Capitals of Culture will present an exciting cultural programme in the capital of Finland.
