Temporary roof could be put up on Riga Castle no sooner than in 2 weeks

BC, Riga, 25.07.2013.Print version
A temporary roof could be put up on Riga Castle no sooner than in one-and-a-half or two weeks, construction company SBRE representative Marite Straume told Nozare.lv, cites LETA.

In the meantime, the construction company is doing everything in its power to protect the burnt out rooms of the castle from wind gusts and rainwater by covering them with a special material.

In the past few days, SBRE workers were not able to access the castle's roof due to strong winds, falling behind the schedule.

It was planned that the temporary roof would be set up by end of July. However, it is now clear that additional one-and-a-half or two weeks will be required.

As reported, Culture Minister Zaneta Jaunzeme-Grende (All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK) believes that an immediate solution must be found for a temporary roof on fire-gutted Riga Castle.

"A solution must be found immediately, as Riga Castle is one of the oldest, grandest and most authentic cultural heritage landmarks in the Latvian capital. The same can be said about the museum collections being stored there, which did not suffer irreversible damage, but are currently threatened by rainfall and mould," points out Jaunzeme-Grende.
