Riga City Council is planning to build more than 5,000 new apartments over the next three years, till 2013, LETA was told by Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony Center).

Usakovs indicated that the council has resolved to solve the current housing problem and is planning to announce a competition for building contractors and investors in early May. As usual, construction of apartments will be overseen by the state-owned company Rigas pilsetbuvnieks.

The locations for the new buildings will be specified over the next two weeks. "At the moment we are looking at nine possible sites. But we also cannot exclude building all the new apartments at one site," said Usakovs.

Rigas pilsetbuvnieks Chairman Ivars Gaters (For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK) told LETA that the company had 170 hectares of land which could be used for construction.

So far this year, three new council-owned residential buildings and one social housing block have already been put into use.
