Construction expert Gulbis being held due to concern that he could dodge prosecution

BC, Riga, 16.01.2015.Print version
Construction inspection expert Andris Gulbis was taken into custody in the Zolitude tragedy case in Latvia due to concern that he could evade prosecution, his attorney Vaida Davidsone told LETA.

She said that her client will appeal the court's decision on the measure of precaution set.

Davidsone said in an interview with LETA that a "measure of precaution has specific requirements, however, in this case, they are missing."

"I understand that the community, frankly, wants blood. However, I believe that the two in custody [Gulbis and the supermarket's construction engineer Ivars Sergets] are not the ones. In my opinion, pressure was applied," the attorney commented.

She indicated that according to what has been written on the Internet, as well the general attitude of the public, people are disappointed and do not believe that these people had to be arrested. "I am a bit shocked. My defendant provided his account of involvement, and cooperated as much as required," Davidsone explained.

As reported, three physical persons – Gulbis, Sergets, and the designer of the Maxima project, architect Andris Kalinka – have the status of suspect, while two legal entities – the Latvian architectural firm Kubs, and the Latvian planning and design firm HND Grupa, which belongs to Sergets – have been imposed with confiscation of property.

Gulbis and Sergets are currently being held in custody, while Kalinka remains under police surveillance and is prohibited from leaving the country.
