At the end of January 2009, Ostcelts construction company laid off five employees – two welders, two construction workers and one cement mason. Another Ventspils construction company Pulss Elkaro released six of its staff members on February 2 – two tinsmiths and four construction workers.

Due to the economy crisis, also Bucher Schoerling Baltic company, which fits up street cleaning machines, also recently made six of its more than 80 employees redundant.

Five persons are planned to be made redundant from the security company Latus sardze.

In January, the unemployment level in Ventpils was 7.5% and very similar figure was registered also in Ventpils District – 7.4%, which is a 1.4% increase of unemployment level, compared with December. In January, the Ventspils SEA branch registered 532 new employment seekers, compared with 377 new officially registered unemployed persons in December.
