Dmitrijs Dokins: milk in Latvia referred to as "white gold"

BC, Riga, 16.06.2014.Print version
People have special attitude toward milk in Latvia, and sometimes it is referred to as "white gold", development director at Food Union Dmitrijs Dokins said in an interview with LETA.

"When I joined Rigas piena kombinats, I saw that in Latvia people have a completely different attitude toward milk than in Russia. Here it is called the "white gold". And that was the moment when Latvia became known as the second ecologically-cleanest country in Europe. We understood that ice cream here has to be made only from natural products," Dokins said.

Dokins says that during the time when he was one of the co-owners at the Russian company Inmarko, ice cream there would not be fully produced from milk.

"Cheap production is not a motivational factor here in Latvia. We re-oriented all brands that previously contained vegetable shortening, – "Tio" and "Pols" – to milk. One of our main mottoes is "Made from Latvian milk and cream"," he added.

Dokins also stressed that the market here in Latvia stands out with the fact that Latvian consumers prefer local products.

He believes that it is not because there are a lot of patriots in Latvia, but because the residents trust the local dairy producers.
