Lithuania introduces ban on selling energy drinks to minors

Print versionFollowing the adoption of amendments to Law on Food, the Seimas of Lithuania banned sales of energy drinks to persons under 18, informs LETA/ELTA.

Under the new regulation, a non-alcoholic beverage, which contains more than 150 mg per litre of caffeine or more than 150 mg litre of caffeine and other central nervous system stimulants such as glucuronlacton, inositol, guaranin, ginsenoside, ginkgo extract or taurine, is considered to be energy drink.
The law establishes ban on selling, buying or transferring in other ways energy drinks to persons under 18. Sellers of energy drinks have the right to ask for identification certifying the buyer is at least 18 years old.
88 MPs voted in favour of the amendments and 6 MPs abstained.
The amendments will take effect on 1 November 2014.
