Alternative proposed for Lithuania's farms affected by African swine fever

BC, Vilnius, 31.03.2014.Print version
Seeking to partially compensate farms affected by African swine fever, the Ministry of Agriculture in Lithuania will propose to apply for the European Union support which would enable to establish businesses alternative to agriculture, informs LETA/ELTA.

"We will not leave pig farmers whose farms have suffered from African swine fever on their own. We would like to provide an opportunity to farmers, residents of rural areas, very small, small and medium-sized enterprises to create an alternative business," said Minister of Agriculture Prof Vigilijus Jukna.

Project funding applications worth up to LTL 690,000 (EUR 200,000) will be accepted. Simplified procedures will apply seeking for support less than LTL 260,000 (EUR 75,000). It will be possible to apply in territories affected by African swine fever.

The budget of the measure Transition to Non-agricultural Activities is expected to reach LTL 13 million (EUR 4 million), after allocating funds between other Lithuanian Rural Development measures for 2007-2013.

Collection of applications should to take place in May-June.
