Hazardous waste incineration facility in Siauliai faces delays

BC, Vilnius, 04.11.2013.Print version
Hazardous waste incineration facility near the city of Siauliai will only be launched when all environmental requirements are ensured – stated Minister of Environment Valentinas Mazuronis at the meeting with Siauliai Regional Department for Environmental Protection (RAAD) specialists, informs LETA/ELTA.

Lithuanian and Italian companies won the tender to construct the hazardous waste incineration facility. The object cost is LTL 86 million (EUR 25 million), of which LTL 52 million (EUR 15 million) is provided from the European Union funds. If Lithuania fails to begin using the facility it would have to return a portion of the funds.

The facility managed by UAB Toksika has failed the launch for more than two years, as test incinerations exceeded the allowed pollution norms.

At the meeting with Siauliai RAAD specialists, the minister stated that hazardous waste incineration facility must have direct pollution monitoring system installed.

"To my knowledge all computers and sensors are available, we only have to agree on the common data transmission and monitoring system. Once this system is installed, we will allow to renew test incinerations and then assess the suitability of machinery for permanent operation. There will be no concessions for environmental requirements," said the minister.

Lithuania still does not have its own hazardous waste incineration plant. The one near Siauliai could become the first and only hazardous waste incineration facility in Lithuania. Currently such waste is moved for disposal abroad.
