Estonian creative businesses are small and fragmented

BC, Tallinn, 24.09.2013.Print version
Enterprise Estonia and the Market Research Institute presented on Monday a report on the Estonian creative businesses sphere, which showed fast development of the sector but pointed out the smallness and fragmentation of creative businesses as a problem, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

This is an obstacle for increasing added value and growth of export ability, Enterprise Estonia said.

Creative businesses employ nearly 30,000 people in Estonia and the total revenues of the sector form over 1 billion euros, forming nearly 3% of Estonia's GDP.

In the past four years, the number of companies of the sector has increased by nearly 70% and the number of employees by nearly 5%.

Due to the economic crisis, the sector's total revenue fell by more than 6% by 2011 which was eased considerably by increased cooperation will of the companies and public sector support.

Enterprise Estonia board chairman Taavi Laur stressed that the competitiveness and integration of the creative businesses sphere with other economic sectors should increase considerably in the future.

The extensive study is based on 2011 statistical data and covered spheres like architecture, film and video, broadcasting, design, performance arts, entertainment software, publishing, art, music and advertising and museums, libraries and handicraft. The previous similar studies were conducted in 2009 and 2005.
