Latvian Culture Minister Zaneta Jaunzeme-Grende told members of the press today that the fire at Riga Castle has not caused irreversible damage to the castle's museum collection, informs LETA.

The most exposed museum items have been taken to safer places.

She said that the damage caused by the fire is still being determined.

Jaunzeme-Grende said that the Latvian National History Museum, which is located in the castle and holds about one million valuable items, had about 40,000 items damaged, but that this damage is not irreversible. She also added that no items from the Latvian National Art Museum's collection was damaged.

State Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman Viktorija Sembele has informed LETA that the fire at Riga Castle has been put out completely.

She said that the fire was completely extinguished at 2:21 p.m. on June 21st.

Sembele emphasizes that the heads of the State Fire and Rescue Service would like to thank all of the fire-fighters involved in putting out the fire at Riga Castle, who bravely worked throughout the night to help save one of Latvia's symbols.
