Latvian Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Edmudns Sprudzs (Reform Party) had a meeting with foreign businessmen yesterday to inform them about Latvia's vision of becoming the world's greenest country by 2020, as the Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry informed LETA.

The meeting was attended by members of the Dutch-Latvian Chamber of Commerce, Belgian-Latvian Business Club, Latvian-Irish and Latvian-Swiss Chambers of Commerce.

"Foreign businessmen see very well what we are now – sometimes they see it even better than we can see. However, they also want to know what Latvia's objectives are, what we want us to become in a few years," said the minister.

That is why Sprudzs believes that Latvian politicians must offer an overall goal of what Latvia should be like in seven years, a goal that would be clear to the entire society.

"Latvia is just one step away from becoming the greenest country in the world," said the minister. The government and the people should confirm to themselves that Latvia can and will be the first in this respect, and that this goal is attainable. A resource-efficient economy may be an important instrument fostering the country's further development, he added.

Ideas and practical solutions necessary to support foreign businessmen in Latvia were also discussed at the meeting – reducing the administrative burden, development of infrastructure, and others.
