Today, European Parliament EPP Group Chairman Joseph Daul met with Latvian Agriculture Minister Laimdota Straujuma and pointed out that he is ready to support Latvia's efforts in evening out direct payments to farmers, Nozare.lv was informed EPP Group press secretary Girts Salmgriezis.

Today, Straujuma is scheduled to meet with high-ranking EP officials to explain Latvia's demands for fairer direct payments as of 2014, writes LETA.

Daul admitted that the planned agricultural reform must be fair to all Baltic States, including Latvia. Therefore the current proposals, which basically envisage unfair direct payments, must not be supported. Daul promised to convince EPP Group members that such distribution of direct payments must not continue, said Salmgriezis.

Straujuma in turn admitted that she will continue to provide all necessary information to EP, Saeima and Cabinet members regarding the unfair system of direct payments and justification to change it to ensure equal competition conditions for all farmers.

Straujuma also participated in a EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting and emphasized that member states should be able to choose from a wide range of agricultural practices the most appropriate measures to ensure solutions to their environmental problems.
