Sale of Latvian land to foreigners becoming big problem

The sale of Latvian land to foreigners has become a big problem, the chairwoman of the Latvian Farmers' Federation Agita Hauka said in an interview on Latvian Radio this morning.

She pointed out that Latvia has bigger and smaller farms. While the larger farms mostly export their products, the smaller farms ensure products for the local market. These smaller farms also have an important role in the development of rural areas, writes LETA.

''Smaller Latvian farmers do not receive enough support, and thus in many cases sell their land to foreigners,'' Hauka added.

She points out that Latvia currently lacks statistics on how much land is actually owned by foreigners.

Hauka mentioned Latgale Province (eastern Latvia) as an example, where Swedes are currently actively buying up land and reforesting these areas. Swedish pensions funds are involved in these activities, which are not interested in short-term profit, but a long-term investment.
