High-ranking bilateral ties are key elements in Latvia's struggle for a more just Common Agricultural Policy. Latvia's priority political dialogue partners are Germany and France, since both countries hold a special role in the bloc's agricultural reform, writes LETA.
At the same time, Kalniete emphasized that Latvian farmers and their organizations are also important in this regard. They are the only ones, who can maintain a dialogue with similar organizations in other countries, she pointed out.
"I believe that Latvia must schedule several lightning visits in the second half-year, attracting mass media attention. All countries must know that the Common Agricultural Policy is highly important for Latvia and the country is determined to fight for fairer conditions during EU budget talks," said Kalniete and emphasized that Europeans are highly sensitive to such notions as justice and solidarity.
Kalniete admitted that Latvia is the only EU member state which expresses its goals regarding the Common Agricultural Policy reform so actively and clearly.
She has already met with several Bundestag members and is also planning to meet with the French Senate and other countries' deputies. Prime ministers, ministers, agricultural organizations must meet at their own level.
Kalniete particularly emphasized the considerable role of Germany. "Germany is an irreplaceable partner in our struggle for change. Therefore, when our interests match, Latvia must send strong signals about its support for German proposals, so that Germany's attitude to Latvia would be as friendly and positive as possible.
