The television company TV3 Latvia (TV3) has decided that it will cease its national broadcasting and become a pay television company next year, Nozare.lv was informed by TV3 director general Baiba Zuzena.

Zuzena explained that, by ceasing its nationnal broadcasting, the company will be able to additionally produce up to four of five new TV shows or broadcasts every year. At the moment, 30 minutes of soap operas or broadcasts cost TV3 EUR 3,000-4,000 (LVL 2,100-2,800), whilst the most popular TV shows cost even up to EUR 10,000, reports LETA.

TV3 believes that 90% of its viewers will not be affected by this change, since they are already using the services of pay TV operators, said Zuzena.

TV3 Latvia was established in 1998. The company belongs to the international media concern "Modern Times Group", which also represents in Latvia "TV6", "3+", "New Media", radio "Star FM" and "Viasat".

As reported, on Monday, the television company LNT also announced that it will switch to pay television.

As of next year, LNT will gradually introduce a subscription fee for broadcasts, LNT Director Andrejs Ekis said in an interview with the newspaper "Vesti Segodna".
