Latvian State Television has severed ties with veteran journalist Karlis Streips as disciplinary action for his uttering a vulgarity ("sluts") on air during his political talk show "Skats no malas" (View from the side) September 19.

The long-running show has also been cancelled.

Sarmite Plume, documentary programming editor, said that it “truly is a shame to have to reject such a professional journalist.” However, Streips has been “called on the carpet” repeatedly for his blunt, thoughtless comments on air, she added.

LTV felt pressure from the Radio and Television Council, that, at a meeting yesterday, insisted steps be taken against Streips. The Council also called the September 19 broadcast in question [a review of the emergency elections] "one-sided", reports LETA.
