"Taking into account that there were some four attempts to get this project through, that there are many players interested in it, I am rather skeptical that there will be any progress regarding the project," says Kampars.
The other important problem is energy, "where we actually have just six months left".
Kampars was planning to visit Persian Gulf Arab states in October to discuss implementation of the liquefied natural gas terminal project in Latvia. It is clear that the next minister will not be able to take over these matters quickly enough, because personal contacts developed over a longer period of time are important, says Kampars, who previously announced that he would not run in the 11th Saeima elections.
By the end of this year, Latvia must also formulate its position on investments into the Visaginas nuclear plant, writes LETA.
All these are very complicated matters that will be hotly debated, said Kampars.
Asked if Latvia's economic policy could change after the elections, Kampars says this is very unlikely. "They can write all kinds of papers, but it will be impossible to introduce a dysfunctional economic model," says Kampars, adding that if the election winners choose to simply do nothing, this may have very serious consequences. For instance, if politicians do not do anything about the gas pipeline system and the terminal, Latvia will remain dependent on one gas supplier after 2017.
