Kubilius opens reconstructed unit of hospital in Ghor

Prime Minister of Lithuania Andrius Kubilius on his visit to Afghanistan's Ghor province, the reconstruction team of which is lead by Lithuania, has opened a reconstructed unit of hospital.

"The fight for freedom by the Afghan people twenty years ago was one of the factors which led to the collapse of the Soviet empire and so we gained our freedom. Therefore, our support to today's Afghanistan has some taste of moral debt. I told this to your president, and I am telling you this once again, opening a new hospital unit," PM Kubilius said.

 

Lithuanians from very beginning of their mission in the Ghor province have been helping the only Chaghcharan based hospital in the Ghor province. They consult local medical doctors, examine patients, take part in surgeries, organize trainings, provide the hospital with medicines and medical equipment, they also participated in the reconstruction of the hospital, the Government says. Prior to going to the opening ceremony of the hospital, prime minister met with Abdullah Haiwad, Governor of Ghor, informs LETA/ELTA.

 

During the meeting, the officials discussed the activity of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan Provincial Reconstruction Team in Ghor and their partners, the current security situation, as well as further prospects of Lithuania's and Afghanistan's cooperation before and after the transfer of responsibility for security to the Afghan leadership. Currently, there are about 220 Lithuanian soldiers, 4 civilians and 4 law enforcement officials in Afghanistan.
