Lithuanian President signs Law on Forests

Danuta Pavilenene, BC, Vilnius, 17.06.2011.Print version
President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite has signed the Seimas reviewed amendments to the Law on Forest, which will not allow destructing and urbanizing forests and will guarantee a free access for the public.

According to the president, changing of forest land use and dissolving forests into small land holdings should be a very rare exception, as the Constitutional Court has interpreted it. After the Seimas' approval of the president's veto, the Law on Forests no longer provides a possibility to carry out private constructions in forests and to dissolve forests into land holdings smaller than 5 hectares.

The law preserves an obligation to restore felled forests or pay a monetary compensation instead. The signed law meets one of the major initial goals, that is, creating real background for implementation of the state's strategic projects. Forests are the treasure of the entire nation, thus, as the president says, the forest law has to serve public interests rather than those of private persons, reports LETA/ELTA.
