The Agriculture Ministry and various farmers' organizations continue to discuss the criteria for receiving excise-free diesel fuel in Latvia. According to the current proposal, farmers will have to confirm at least LVL 200 income per hectare to be eligible to receive excise-free diesel fuel, Chairman of Farmers' Saeima, Juris Lazdins, informed the business portal Nozare.lv.

Excise-free fuel is meant for those farmers who are capable of producing agricultural products and have steady income. Those farmers who do not produce anything should not be eligible to receive it, whilst other farmers should be able to meet the criteria, writes LETA.

Agriculture minister's press secretary Daiga Muceniece confirmed that the ministry is discussing the criteria for receiving free diesel fuel with several farmers' organizations.

As reported, on March 15, the government decided that farmers will be able to receive a total of 85.5 million liters of excise-free diesel fuel. If the demand will exceed 85.5 million liters, then the amount of hectares which will receive it will be reviewed. The ceiling on excise-free diesel fuel will also be reduced, ensuring an extra LVL 4.2 million in the state budget, previously informed Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs (Union of Greens and Farmers).
