Speaking on Friday at the Riga session of the Baltic Assembly (BA), Saeima deputy and BA Social Affairs Committee Chair Silva Bendrate advocated greater integration among the Baltic States in order to implement specific cross-border projects in the health care sector.

Uniting resources would bring about a high quality but affordable health care system in the region, Bendrate declared, mentioning several specific avenues Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia could take, writes LETA.

Her Committee, for example, organized comprehensive discussion on an effective system for organ transplants. Also debated were setting up joint specialized clinics, a consolidated compensatory medication system, providing joint first aid services in border towns, establishment of a joint sperm bank, etc.

Bendrate admitted that implementing the above would be a time consuming process, therefore she suggested drawing up a plan of action first. She praised the decision made by the three Baltic PMs to establish a special task force within the Baltic Council of Ministers to deal with social and health care issues. It held its first meeting yesterday to set objectives and future schedule.
