The Saeima's Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee in Latvia, in preparing the Law on Electronic Mass Media for its final reading, yesterday suggested the continuation of analogue TV broadcasting until December 2013, the date until which Lattelecom have exclusive rights over digital television broadcasting, LETA was informed by the head of the commission Ingrida Circene (New Era).

At present, a Cabinet Regulation determines that Lattelecom is the only company with the right to digital broadcasting. The government has also set the date of December 1, 2011 as the date for the final switch from analogue to digital, and the European Commission have been informed.
Circene previously explained that the changeover poses a threat to regional and local TV stations, as the tariff offered to them by Lattelecom is "much too expensive".
"For example, in Poland a decision was taken to extend the changeover period until 2015, and our committee has also decided to do everything in its power to ensure the future diversity of Latvian regional television," explained Circene.
