Although Estonian food industry Põltsamaa Felix suffered a fall in sales by 15% in 2009, the enterprise managed to earn modest profits.

The turnover of the company in 2009 was 250 million kroons and profit 4 mln kroons. Exports formed 40% and the company had an average of 140 employees.

CEO of the company Anti Orav explained that the situation was aided by the diverse product variety and therefore the enterprise is intent on refraining from focussing on one single group of products. “If you want to make it in Estonia and grow, a certain critical mass and diversification of risks is necessary,” he said.

Põltsamaa Felix belongs to the Norwegian bourse-listed company Orkla, the same that soon confectionery company Kalev will have. Orav said that the owner has seen it all and doesn’t let falls and rises disturb it.

Orav said that while last year when discussing the Estonian economic situation with a Lithuanian colleague they stated that they cannot even see the tunnel, now there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The company produces canned food, juices, wines, ketchup and mayonnaise etc.
