The coalition parties yesterday agreed on maintaining the reduced VAT rate of 10% in 2011 for books and the print media, Saeima Speaker Gundars Daudze (Union of Greens and Farmers) confirmed to LETA.

Daudze encouraged a sitting of the coalition parties to extend the reduced VAT rate for print media, educational literature and fiction publications for at least one more year.

If the time period for the reduced VAT rate is not extended, it will rise to 21% from January 1 next year.

The coalition parties agreed to forward a bill on extending the reduced VAT rate for examination in the second reading of the corresponding law.

Dzintars Zakis, leader of New Era's Saeima group, told LETA that he supported a reduced VAT rate for this category, as people should not be left without information, especially in the countryside.

As reported, the coalition parties also supported the reduction of VAT from 21% to 10% for hotels and other tourist accommodation.
