Fortum urges Estonian MPs to keep support for co-production plants

Juhan Tere, BC, Tallinn, 28.01.2010.Print version
Finnish energy company Fortum focusing on the Nordic countries, Russia and the Baltic Rim area, turned to Estonian lawmakers with proposal to drop down plans to end subsidies for electricity and heat co-production plants that would threaten the company's investments in Estonia, LETA reports, referring to BBN and Bloomberg.

Riigikogu is expected to pass amendments to the Energy Market Law in the second of three readings to secure the opening of a power exchange for companies from April.

According to the changes, support to two power and heat co-production plants, that Fortum built in Estonia, would end. Therefore, the planned amendments would breach agreements between Estonia and Finland on investment protection, Fortum representative’s note.
