The surges in excise taxes on alcohol that took place in 2008 and the economic depression have clearly affected the alcohol market in Estonia – the production volumes of strong and light alcohol as well as sales volumes are smaller than last year, Postimees/LETA writes.

While in previous years alcoholic beverages retail turnover had increased in Estonia year after year, in the first half of this year, sales were by 7.4% smaller than last year. The turnover was 1.219 billion kroons in the second quarter.

Production also fell. Production of strong alcoholic beverages amounted to 8.01 million litres in the first half of the year (10.6 mln at the same time last year), that of beer to 65.8 (70), that of weak alcoholic beverages to 9.3 (13.6) and fruit and berry wines to 1.4 (2.6) million litres.

CEO of Liviko Janek Kalvi commented that the statistics cannot be basis for concluding that the consumption of alcohol decreases similarly – illegal alcohol is used more widely instead.
