The Interior Ministry of Latvia plans to switch from Tele2 to another mobile phone operator due to the "Mazsalaca meteorite" prank, Interior Minister Linda Murniece (New Era) told LETA.

"The Interior Ministry has no wish to promote the business of a company that tries to create publicity at our expense," Murniece said.

As reported, the "Mazsalaca meteorite" was in the news all over the world on Monday. Mass media in countries near and far are reporting about the "Latvian meteorite", pointing out that the town of Mazsalaca has become an overnight celebrity.

Police officers as well as researchers and geologists from not only Latvia but also other countries worked at the scene all day, concluding that the crater was a man-made hole.

The same as the interior minister, also Editor in Chief of the newspaper "Kulturas Forums" Inga Steimane has criticized the Tele2 actions as deplorable and has decided to stop using the company's telecommunications services.

Es reported earlier, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (New Era) and the employees of the premier's bureau stopped using the telecommunication company Tele2 services already last week.

According to information provided by premier's press secretary Liga Krapane, Dombrovskis' bureau switched to another operator because of the poor communications quality of Tele2.

Currently Latvijas Mobilais telefons is the mobile phone operator for the prime minister's bureau.

After tendering in July this year, Tele2 replaced LMT as the mobile telephony company for the State Chancellery.

The total value of the contract signed with Tele2 for a period of five years was LVL 9,358, including value-added tax of LVL 1,624.
