The sales revenue of the Viru Shopping Centre in the first half of the year 2009 fell by nearly 19% in the year-on-year comparison, writes Postimees Online/LETA.

The turnover of Viru Centre amounted to 814 million kroons.

Ants Vasar, member of the management board of the Viru Shopping Centre, stated that the decline in turnover comes from the decrease in the average purchase amount that is on one hand caused by the rationality and sustainable consumer behaviour on the part of buyers and on the other hand from major discount campaigns as the number of visitors and of purchases has not fallen.

"Constant discount campaigns on the market have caused a situation where consumers are getting used to very favourable prices and it is nearly impossible for stores to sell goods without discounts or sales campaigns," noted Vasar.

In the first six months of 2009, the Viru Shopping Centre was visited by 5.2 million persons who made 4.7 million purchases. The shopping centre is visited by an average of 30,000 persons per day. Vasar said that these numbers are satisfactory as on the basis of the six-months results, an average of 90 per cent of visitors made a purchase and there has been no significant decline in the number of visitors.
