Wages to increase 8% for most healthcare workers in Latvia in 2016

Print versionLatvian Health and Social Care Workers' Trade Union and Health Ministry's representatives agreed in principle yesterday on a new salary system for healthcare workers, under which the average salaries for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers would increase 8% in 2016.

Valdis Keris, the head of the Health and Social Care Workers' Trade Union, told LETA that this would be a substantial pay rise and it would mostly concern low-income earners in healthcare.
Salaries for high-income earners will also increase albeit not as much, said Keris, adding that the new system was fair and proportionate.
The next meeting between the trade union and Health Ministry's experts will take place on Monday, December 14, when the final agreement on the new salary system is to be reached.
Last month, Saeima approved allotting additional EUR 10 million for raising healthcare workers' salaries.
