Chairman of the Riigikogu Committee on Rural Life in Estonia Ivari Padar stated that when compiling the 2016 State budget, the Government will need to find extra funds to support enterprises and farmers producing pork and milk, reports LETA, referring to Riigikogu Press Office.

He estimated, that if the State will fail to support these two leading sectors of the Estonian agriculture, the crisis they are in would deepen further.

“Our agricultural sector has survived different difficult times, but the current situation is a source of deep concern,” said Padar, explaining that in addition to economic problems (including low prices on the global market), the sectors working with milk cows and pigs are under pressure from political factors and swine plague.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary committee said that extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary measures, and emphasised that the State will have to prevent important agricultural sectors from having to cease operating.

Padar said that in his capacity as the Chairman of the Riigikogu Committee on Rural Life, he supports the joint petition from the Estonian Chamber of Agriculture and Commerce, Estonian Confederation of Farmers, Estonian Confederation of Agriculture and the Estonian Dairy Association to the Government.
