Kolumbija, which is one of the largest fish processing companies in Latvia, will keep about 60 workers. They will work twice a week to carry out specific orders. The company plans on fully resuming production in the fall of 2015.
"I believe that the most important task for our [agriculture] minister at the moment is to negotiate with the Russian government. It would be also important to send our State Food and Veterinary Service representatives to Russia for negotiations. I believe that this summer ought to be spent actively to solve the situation in the coming three months," said Igors Krupniks, CEO of Kolumbija.
According to lsm.lv, the company previously attempted to export its produce to China and several European countries, but failed.
As reported, Rosselkhoznadzor announced last week that as of June 4, fish and fish product imports from Latvia and Estonia are banned.
Meanwhile, the Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People's Republic of China (CNCA) has officially given permission to 11 Latvian fish processing companies to begin exports to China.
