The Russian food safety supervising board Rosselhoznadzor announced on June 3rd 2015 that as of June 4, fish and fish product imports from Latvia and Estonia are banned, reports INTERFAX/LETA.

The board's spokesman said that all the necessary materials, including a report on the inspection results of these Sergey Dankvert countries, will be sent to the respective embassies.

According to him, the ban applies to those fish processing companies that are included on the list of suppliers.

Meanwhile, State Food and Veterinary Service Director Maris Balodis told LETA Wednesday that no official resolution has been received yet. "I am abroad at the moment, but my colleagues informed me that the Russian service has imposed a ban. We have not received an official resolution yet, thus, we have no information whether the ban applies only to those five companies that were inspected at the end of May or the entire industry," said Balodis.

As reported, at the end of May 2015, Rosselhoznadzor experts carried out inspections at five Latvian and four Estonian fish processing companies, which mainly deal with production of sprats.

"The inspectors were very concerned about what they saw, – it was impossible to recognize the security system control of the production as efficient," the board's representative Ivan Ponomarev said.

At the end of March, Rosselhoznadzor also detected excessive amounts of benzopyrene in Latvian sprats.
