BC, Riga, 05.02.2015.Print version
The National Electronic Mass Media Council in Latvia has found out that Baltic Media Union, the company that has the right to distribute "Russia-24" television channel in Latvia, is urging cable television companies to also carry "Rossia-24", and the Electronic Mass Media Council has decided to inform all the cable television operators about the risks this may entail, informs LETA.

The Electronic Mass Media Council is also planning to examine the content of "Russia-24" television in the near future.

Taking into consideration that "Russia-24" is a Russian television whose operations are subject to Russia's laws, Latvian companies that hold the right to rebroadcast the channel in Latvia may be held responsible for the content of the television they carry, the Electronic Mass Media Council told LETA. In other words, if a cable television decides to rebroadcast "Russia-24", it will be held responsible for the content of "Russia-24" programs.

In the near future, the Electronic Mass Media Council will begin to analyze the content of third-country televisions rebroadcast in Latvia, including "Russia-24".

The council is also urging Saeima to complete review of a bill, proposed by the council, which deals with third-country televisions and which Saeima reviewed in the first reading last November.

"Russia-24" belongs to All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company. Because of the propaganda it carries, "Russia-24" has been banned in several countries.

Baltic Media Union was registered in 2011, it belongs to Estonian citizens Oleg Domanin and Lyubov Domainina, according to Firmas.lv data. In 2013, the company posted EUR 292,444 in turnover and EUR 246,989 in profit.
