European multi-language voting application gives EU residents opportunity to try out parties

"EUVOX 2014" – the pan-European, multilingual online Voting Advice Application (VAA), was presented at the European Union House in Riga, which provides EU residents the opportunity to try out political parties before European Parliament (EP) elections, informs LETA.

The application is available online, and it can determine the compatibility of political viewpoints between the user and the parties running for the election, as the EP's press secretary in Latvia, Marta Ribele, indicated.

Ribele said that the compatibility results are interesting, however, voters need to understand that all matters are resolved by the EP, reminding that the EP is the sole EU institution directly elected through general elections. It is one of the largest democratic assemblies in the world, and 80 percent of Latvian laws are based on EP decisions.

Andis Kudors, Executive Director at the Centre for East European Policy Studies, who has studied party platforms for the EP elections, admitted that drawing up a pre-election platform is difficult, nevertheless, individual parties have done it frivolously, without considering what the EP decision might be. He said that in analyzing the party platforms, he was disappointed, because the idea of a "global Latvian" has not proved itself.

"Less than half of the parties running for the EP elections, have drawn attention to the issue of foreign affairs. Some parties have indicated that the current EU foreign affairs must be improved, but others – that revision is necessary," Kudors said, indicating that he could notice similarities in the platforms with Russian foreign policy.
