Latvia may revoke Mikhail Zadornov's residence permit

Saeima Social Cohesion Committee has received a petition asking that the popular Russian comedian Mikhail Zadornov be stripped of his Latvia's residence permit. LETA has learned that the committee has decided to forward the petition to the Interior Ministry.

The petition says that Zadornov's residence permit should be revoked over his public statements following the Ukraine crisis.

Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (Reform Party) said yesterday that several persons associated with the developments in Ukraine could be included in Latvia's black list in the near future.

He reminded that the decision on including a person on Latvia's black list and banning the person from traveling to the Schengen countries must be based on security authorities' conclusions, not political motives. "To include a person on the list, there must be substantiated assessment of why this person poses threat to not just Latvia but also the European Union. The interior minister's decision to include a person on the "black list" is an administrative act and may be appealed to the Supreme Court or the prosecutor general. Persons included on Schengen's black list may appeal this to the country holding the EU presidency. Six persons have appealed my decisions since I was appointed the interior minister, but all these decisions have been upheld," said Kozlovskis.

Previously several Saeima members, including Dzintars Rasnacs (All For Latvia-For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK) and Ainars Latkovskis (Unity), said that persons who actively advocate Russia's incursion into Ukraine should be banned from entering Latvia.
