Print versionEstonia opened its first honorary consulate in Latvia, in Daugavpils; the honorary consul Aivar Kesküla says that Estonians could develop more economic education and culture cooperation with the Latgale region, LETAPublic Broadcasting reports.

There are Byelorussian and Russian consulates in Daugavpils and Estonian Ambassador in Latvia Mati Vaarmann said that the fact that there are no other cities in Latvia that would have the consular representations of two foreign states explains why Estonia should have at least an honorary consul there. "If we look at the list of honorary consuls operating in Latvia, all of them are in Riga or Jurmala, thus Estonians are pioneers in a sense that we dare to come further than Riga," said Vaarmann.
Aivar Kesküla heads an engine repairs plant in Daugavpils.
Estonia has currently over 170 honorary consuls in 76 states.
