Lithuania elected to UN Security Council

Lithuania was elected to the United Nations Security Council for the first time. Lithuania will serve as one of ten non-permanent members on the Council beginning on 1 January 2014, informed BC presidential press service.
"As member of the UN Security Council, Lithuania will take part in the decision making on key global security problems. After Lithuania's EU Presidency, it is a new and honorable challenge as well as commitment to the entire international community," the President said.
When it completes the EU Presidency, Lithuania is going to take over the UN Security Council Presidency on January 1. There are 15 members on the Council.
Lithuania got 187 votes. The United Nations has 193 member states.
