During the party congress, the head of the Reform Party's group at Saeima Edmunds Demiters was voted in as the party's new chairman, informs LETA.

92 congress delegates voted for Demiters, while 42 voted for the other candidate – Reform Party board member Romualds Razuks.

After the vote, Demiters pointed out that he is honored to become the party's new chairman. He told delegates that there will be tough days ahead, and that each party member will have to work hard for the good of the party.

He pointed out that the Reform Party is the youngest out of all the party's voted into parliament. ''Two years in politics seems like a very short time. There are some tasks we have already completed, but there are still many more that must be carried out,'' Demiters said.

Demiters also said that the party's stance for honest politics, good governance, a balanced economy and the fight against corruption remains the Reform Party's cornerstone. He also added that the party still does not separate anyone by ethnic lines.

He also pointed out that the Reform Party has noticed that other coalition partners are not keeping their promises to voters, and are even trying to break some of their promises.

Demiters also said during his address that the results of the recent local government elections show that there must be consolidation between right leaning and centric parties, and added that parties with similar ideologies must be able to come together.
