The candidacy of Elmar Vaher was discussed on Monday by the coalition council. Next, the Riigikogu legal committee has to voice its opinion about the suitability of the candidate. Delfi said that its information shows Vaher's candidacy suits the committee and the government can then appoint Vaher.
The previous director general of the Police and Border Guard Board Raivo Küüt announced of his resignation last autumn over the scandal involving use of non-calibrated traffic speed radars. His last day of work was February 28.
Interior ministry held a public contest for his replacement but that failed since the three final candidates were all rejected by the selection committee. Then interior minister Vaher proposed justice ministry deputy chancellor Priit Kama as the police chief but Kama's candidacy draw a lot of criticism and Reform Party opposition failed his candidacy too.
Elmar Vaher (born 1975) has worked in the police system for many years; he was the head of central criminal police in 2005-2008 and the North Estonian police prefect since 2008.
