Latvia and Bangladesh discuss bilateral cooperation opportunities

Yesterday, Foreign Ministry State Secretary Andris Teikmanis met with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dipu Moni to discuss Latvian-Bangladeshi relations, their development and the current situation in Asia, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry's press and information department.

Teikmanis and Moni noted the excellent cooperation between Latvia and Bangladesh within the framework of international organizations and expressed interest in promoting bilateral relations, especially in culture and science, fostering human contacts and mutual comprehension.

 

The officials also noted the possibilities for Latvian-Bangladeshi parliamentary cooperation. Bangladesh is interested in closer economic cooperation with Latvia to increase trade turnover, investments and exchange experience in various economic areas.

 

This was the first time that a high-ranking Bangladeshi official visited Latvia. Moni also met with Agriculture Minister Laimdota Straujuma, Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ojars Kalnins (Unity) and university representatives.

 

Bangladesh recognized Latvia's independence on September 9, 1991. Diplomatic relations between both countries were established on January 21, 1993.
